Lake Tazawa

A beautiful lake with the greatest depth in Japan

This mysterious, circular lake with a diameter of approximately 6 km is the deepest caldera lake in Japan, with a maximum depth of 423 meters.

It is also known as Japan’s Lake Baikal (the deepest lake in the world) and is the 17th deepest lake in the world, and because of its depth, it never freezes even in winter.

The surface of the lake is a fantastic lurid color, with high transparency and beautiful scenery surrounded by trees. It is the 19th largest lake in Japan in terms of area, and has a rich seasonal variety.

Visitors can also drive around Lake Tazawa, and Kiritanpo stores and campgrounds are scattered around the lake.

Lake Tazawa is also home to the legend of Princess Tatsuko, a beautiful woman who transformed into the form of a dragon. A shining golden bronze statue built in honor of the legend stands on the west side of the lake.

The contrast between the statue of Tatsuko and the lake is truly a picturesque sight, and many tourists take pictures of it.

We also recommend taking a sightseeing boat to fully enjoy the mysterious blue lake. During the 40-minute boat ride, you can view the Tatsuko statue, shrine, and mountains planted with Akita cedar from the surface of the lake.
