Tamagawa Onsen

Natural rock bath and hidden hot spring of high acidity

Located along Route 341 leading to Lake Tazawa in the southwestern part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, this quiet hot spring is surrounded by the bosom of the Yake Mountains.

The hot spring gushes out into the hot spring’s upper hand, reaching the boiling point, and boasts a gushing volume of 9,000 liters per minute, the highest gushing volume in Japan for a single location.

The spring is a highly acidic chloride spring that contains radium, which over time petrifies to form “Hokutoishi,” Japan’s only natural monument. The spring has long been widely known as a cure-all for all illnesses.

Winter traffic:
Depending on the year, a section of Route 341 is closed to traffic from late November to late April of the following year, so access from the Kazuno City side is not possible. From the Senboku City side, only Hago Kotsu buses and some cabs accompanying the buses are allowed to pass through the section from “Furusato Kaikan-mae” near the Tamagawa Dam to Shintamagawa Onsen (emergency vehicles and permitted business vehicles are allowed). This is because there are few houses in the area, and in the event of an accident or vehicle breakdown, it would be difficult to detect and rescue the victims at an early stage, and there is a risk of distress. For this reason, a parking lot near Tazawako Station will be provided for visitors with their own vehicles.
