Yuri-Honjo City is located in the southern part of Akita, and its name was changed from Honjo City in a merger in March 2005 (Heisei 17). Honjo Park in Yurihonjo City is a historic site park of Honjo Castle (Tsurumai Castle), and is famous for its cherry blossoms, with a cherry blossom festival held from mid to late April, and an azalea festival held from mid to late May.
Yurihonjo-shi Boat Plaza Aqua Pal is another tourist attraction, a facility developed by Yurihonjo-shi as a place to gather information and learn about water and rivers. The Water and River Museum introduces the nature and history of the Koyoshi River through photos and videos. In addition, the Michikawa Coast on the Sea of Japan coast is known as the birthplace of Japanese rockets, and a monument commemorating the birthplace of Japanese rockets has been erected there.
The city of Nakaho, west of Yuri-Honjo, is home to tourist attractions such as Nigaho Hot Springs, Kisakata Onsen (hot springs), and Kanmanji Temple. Kisakata, where the temple is located, is known as the northernmost scenic spot visited by Matsuo Basho on his Ou-no-Hosomichi pilgrimage.
