The Oga-Hachirogata area offers tourist attractions such as Maruyama, Hachiman Shrine, and Mayama; sightseeing events such as Tanabata Festival, Sea of Japan Melon Marathon, and Oga Sea of Japan Fireworks; and local delicacies such as Inaniwa udon, Kiritanpo, and Iburi Gako.
Oga City is located in western Akita Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan and occupying most of the Oga Peninsula. The Oga Peninsula is home to Kankuyama and Motoyama, with several rivers flowing to the sea, Toga Bay in the western part of the city, and Irimizaki at the northwestern end.
The Oga Aquarium GAO is the leading tourist attraction on the Oga Peninsula. There are about 400 species of creatures on display here. In the large tank with an underwater tunnel, grouper, Akita Prefecture's fish, swim in the tank, and polar bears and penguins can be seen.
Mt. Kanpu is a landmark of the Oga Peninsula and is known as a mountain with a feminine feel. It is not very high at 355 meters above sea level, but the entire area is covered with beautiful green grass and offers a great view.
Hachirokata Town is located in the northwestern part of Akita Prefecture, and the best place to visit here is the Oogata Village Reclamation Museum. The museum exhibits the history of how Oogata Village was established before land reclamation and the history of Hachiro Lagoon. On that footstep, head to the remaining lake of Hachiro Lagoon, where you can see the remnants of what was once Japan's second largest lake.
