Kourakukan

Japan’s oldest wooden playhouse

This is the oldest wooden shibai-goya with a blend of Japanese and Western styles that has not been moved or restored and is still in use today.

It is a two-story wooden building with gabled gable ends. The exterior is Western-style, but the interior is a typical Japanese-style playhouse with hanamichi (a pathway for flowers), suppon, and a revolving stage, etc. The building is characterized by its blend of Japanese and Western styles.

Performances are given two to three times a day from mid-April to late November by the six troupes of the Super Popular Theatre Downtown Kabuki Troupe.

On July 5, 6, and 7, the Shochiku Kabuki Grand Theatre presents the Shochiku Kabuki Grand Theatre, where visitors can enjoy up-close performances of dignified and dignified performances by the best Kabuki actors of the day.

The theater was established in 1910 as a welfare facility for the Kosaka Mine. The first performance was given by the Onoe Matsutsuru troupe of Osaka Kabuki.
